| Fifty Years of General Practice on the Far South Coast. 1947 to 1997.
Dr Edwin Cordeaux Blomfield. My family, colleagues, friends, and patients have asked me on numerous occasions, to record my life as a General Practitioner on the Far South Coast of NSW. Finally I realized that I should write this history as I have seen it pass in the last 50 years. So much has changed over this period in many, many areas. I will try to portray the changes as they affected me and the people of the Far South Coast. |

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BEGA
Although Captain Cook discovered the eastern coast of Australia, no accurate maps of the foreshores could be made as a strong southerly surge kept his ship out to sea. It was not until late in 1797 that George Bass, at the direction of Governor Hunter, set out in the open whaleboat to chart the coastline. On December 17, 1797, he entered the mouth of the Bega River where he remained for three days charting the river up as far as Jellat Jellat. He found the natives friendly. They took him to fresh water and gave him fish. |
